[It’s during the dead of night when Lyn comes back home. She looks at all the windows of the house to see that none of the lights are on.]
LYN: Just in case…
[Lyn takes out a pack of makeup wipes and takes one out. She scrubs her face until most of the makeup has come off.]
LYN: [sighs] Okay.
[Lyn takes out her keys and attempts to…[Read more]
In her bedroom, a girl, Sam, paces back and forth while her girlfriend lounges in a beanbag chair by her bed. She has a slightly disheveled appearance, hissing every few moments.
SAM: You don’t understand. Well, you do, but- Anyways! It hurts, okay? It just hurts. It’s not like I want to be in pain, but I have to. Do you even know how much it…[Read more]
A: I’m going to get rid of your depression today. You’re never going to hear from her ever again.
B: … *gasp* Aww! Oh my goodness…
B: My depression never existed.
B: That’s so cuuuttteee, it just started hugging it… Aww…
B: Why can’t society be this adorable?
B: I want a monkey.

It didn’t hit until right after I stepped out the front door. In retrospect, I kind of sensed it was coming, but I ignored all the signs. Now, though, the consequences were catching up to me.
I really, really needed to go.
The time it took to unlock the door and take off my shoes and coat felt like eons. My body was a bomb ticking away,…[Read more]
I can’t help but flinch
At the first spark before it bursts
This same thing many times before, but
I treat it as unfamiliar every time.
As something to be feared.
As something unknown.
They will tell you that
Flames leave everything seared.
That lush trees and perfect houses will turn
Into nothing but charred bits that…[Read more]
Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud.
The alarm screams into your ear
Until it grabs you by the lobes and
Drags you away from the comfort of a dream
Into a nightmare. Into the unknown.
You don’t know where you’re going
You don’t know what to do.
You can’t see anything, and you can’t hear anything except for the…[Read more]
Something I noticed that Waleed did is use “I” at both the beginning of the sentence and after the comma that splits each individual line. He also makes the first part of every line rhyme with the second part of the same line. In my opinion, having the rhyming sequence contained within the line makes the poem read like a rap, because the space…[Read more]
Beep. Beep. Beep.
The alarm screams into my ear, louder each time
Until I can no longer keep my eyes closed.
I don’t want to wake up.
But I swipe up to snooze, filling the room with silence besides
The thunderous thumping of my heart.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
7:15AM, for some reason I feel like I won’t have enough time
To wash my hair, cha…[Read more]
“You have a nice smile,” he says.
He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
He doesn’t know that your smile
Once brought tears and fear.
“I like holding your hands,” he says.
Does he now?
Wait ’til he hears about
the destruction you’ve caused, the
suffering. The bruises.
“You have a big heart,” he says.
Maybe, but as big as it is,
it d…[Read more]
Her cheeks turn red like blue roses
Cultivated and cared for by hungry pests throughout the winter
Her hands are egg yolks, waiting to be held in your white.
Her soft giggle is much like the construction happening across the street.
And her eyes, like roller parks,
Make you want to swim in them.
